The Smalltown Boy dance trend

A two-person video format: one of you screams into the camera while the other dances behind, then you swap places. Here is how the 22 seconds are built and how to make your own.

The format in one sentence

Two people share one frame. Person A stands close to the camera, hands clamped to the head, and screams straight into the lens. Person B stays small in the background and dances. Partway through they trade roles: B steps forward and screams, A drops back and dances.

The clip then opens up into wider shots of both people dancing together and ends with the two of them side by side, reaching toward the camera.

The beat sheet

  • 0 to 7 seconds: A screams in close-up, B dances behind. A ends the act by reaching toward the lens.
  • 7 to 13 seconds: the swap. B comes forward and screams, A dances behind.
  • 13 to 16 seconds: B holds the close-up, then the camera moves out to a high-angle view of both dancing.
  • 16 to 19 seconds: two quick wide shots of both people dancing, one from above and one from ground level against the sky.
  • 19 to 22 seconds: both stand side by side and reach toward the camera.

How to film it for real

You need two people, a plain wall or fence as a backdrop and a phone on a tripod or a steady hand. Film in vertical 9:16, keep the framing the same for the scream shots, and rehearse the swap so the hand-off lands on the beat of the sound.

Most of the effort goes into the swap and the final wide shots: they need a second take or a helper holding the phone. That is the part people usually skip when they use an AI generator instead.

How to make it with AI

An AI generator rebuilds the trend from two photos. You give it one photo of Person A and one of Person B, and it recreates every scene with their faces, hair and outfits, keeping the swap and the cuts where the original has them.

Because the cuts match, you can add the trending sound on TikTok afterwards and the scream and the swap line up with the beat.

Tips for a clean result

  • Use one clear, front-facing photo per person with the whole face visible.
  • Skip sunglasses, hats and masks. Anything over the face makes the likeness drift.
  • Use a full-body photo for Person B, who spends the first half dancing in the background.
  • Only use photos of yourself or people who agreed to appear.
